The exterior renovation of Ocean Vista draws inspiration from the rocks along the coastal trail. The salty sea breeze has caused layers of minerals to adhere to the surface, forming distinctive brown and reddish rocks in the region. The new functional elements of the design echo these rocks, both in form and color, creating a harmonious blend with the natural surroundings. The carefully crafted lines of the add-on features filter sunlight, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadows where human meets nature.
What sets Ocean Vista apart is its ability to optimize the functions of a public bathroom while bringing people closer to nature. By reorganizing the interior layout and introducing new functional elements, the design transforms the space into an authentic public space for all. The addition of a viewing platform allows visitors to enjoy the breathtaking ocean view, while a balcony seating area provides the perfect spot to observe the stars at night. A long bench invites people to relax and unwind, creating a welcoming atmosphere.
The challenges faced during the renovation included reorganizing the interior spatial layout and introducing new functional elements within the existing concrete structure. The goal was to go beyond the simple function of a public bathroom and subvert the perception of typical facilities in Macau, which are often associated with darkness, dirtiness, messiness, and unpleasant odors.
The Ocean Vista public toilet renovation project was completed in May 2021, within a two-month renovation period. Located in Coloane Macau, this design has received recognition for its creativity and ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2022. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
With its unique connection to nature and its innovative approach to public bathroom design, Ocean Vista sets a new standard for functional and aesthetically pleasing facilities. It showcases the potential for blending art, architecture, and technology to create spaces that enhance the overall lifestyle experience.
